[Singapore, April 27] The LIV Golf League makes its eagerly awaited debut in Singapore on Friday and the biggest names in world golf cannot wait to get the competition underway at the LIV Golf Singapore presented by Resorts World Sentosa on the Serapong at Sentosa Golf Club.
Legions of Asian golf fans can experience the league’s innovative format and action-packed style as a world-class field of 48 players battle it out in simultaneous team and individual play over three days.
For six-time major champion Phil Mickelson, it’s a welcome return to a favourite destination. The HyFlyers GC captain made six consecutive appearances at Sentosa Golf Club from 2007- 2012 in the Barclays Singapore Open with a best finish of ninth.
He said: “There’s a lot of things I love about this, going back to when it was the Barclays Singapore Open and coming here and playing here. I really love everything about it. I feel really good when I get here. It’s such a clean, beautiful city. The people treat us with such respect, and the golf course, it’s as well maintained a golf course as I think I’ve ever seen. It’s just incredible.
“For such a small country to be able to bring world-class golf and have such a world-class golf course to host us on is exciting for all of us to be here.”
Mickelson, one of 17 in the field who has played pro tournaments on the Serapong course, has been working on aspects of his game ahead of his return. He explained: “To play Sentosa effectively, you’re going to have a lot of shots from 160 to 210, a lot of full 6-, 7-, 8-iron shots, and you need to hit those really well and you need to drive the ball well.
“If I want to play well here, those are the areas that I really need to focus on. So that’s what I’ve been working on coming in here. Having played Sentosa a number of times like I have, knowing the golf course the way I know it, it has given me time to prepare for the shots that I have coming up, and I’ve spent a lot of time in those areas trying to be sharp for this week.”
Bryson DeChambeau, captain of Crushers GC, is excited to make his debut in Singapore, on a course he may have to plot his way around. He said: “The golf course is really tight so you’re not going to see a lot of drives out of me this week. I have got to play strategic and smart. The greens are pure, I love the greens, and that’s where I think I can thrive this week.
“It’s a tee shot golf course. You are going to hit the greens. They are pretty big greens, and the greens are pretty pure. You should be able to putt pretty well, but you’ve got to drive it well this week.”
The 2020 US Open winner added: “It’s a beautiful country, really clean, it’s really nice. It’s going to be vibrant out there and we are going to have some good crowds this week… We are excited to see the fans and give them a show.”
